MIPET & Safety and Security

MIPETMIPET - The International Master in Industrial Plant Engineering and Technologies of the Polytechnic School of Genoa University, in cooperation with Institutions and Scientific Societies, Industries and Associations is promoting this Safety & Security Workshop. Indeed the 8th Edition of MIPET involves, as usual, an international class composed by top quality young engineers coming from worldwide (Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America) sponsored by major Companies leading innovation and competition. In facts, MIPET provides a strategic advantage based on the strong engagement of Academic, Scientific and Technical Experts coming from Prestigious Universities and Leading Industries promoting Workshops on major Challenges, open to Institutions, Agencies, Companies and Professionals Communities devoted to empower their International Excellence. Safety and Security are today major challenges in several application areas and the innovative technologies and methodoloiges are fundamental to face them.

Safety & Security Workshop

This Workshop is titled: Safety & Security and it presents Innovative Technologies and Methodologies devoted to face Challenges in these sectors. It is important to outline that Safety & Security are correlated and horizontal issues proposing new business opportunities in several sectors: from traditional industrial application to innovative ones including Urban Environments, Homeland Security and Information Age issues.

Venue and Date: September 25th, MMXVII, Salone, Piano Nobile, Villa Cambiaso, Polytechnic School, Genova University, via Montallegro 1, Genova, Italy

Workshop Contents & Goals

The Safety and Security Workshop presents methodologies and models devoted to address these issues in Industrial Plants and Urban Areas. This Workshop presents traditional risks (e.g. Fires and Explosions) and new threats (e.g. Drones, CBRN, Cyber Security) as well as the Innovative Approaches devoted to reduce Vulnerability, Prevent Accidents and Mitigate Effects. Safety and Security Workshop is tailored for Decision Makers, Company Executives, Governmental Agents, Engineers, Technicians & Professionals interested to being updated on new Solutions in this field. Safety and Security Workshop involves experts in Safety and Security from Institutions, Academic Scientists and Technical Experts dealing with most advanced new simulators and models for these applications; real cases and interactive demonstrations will be presented and demonstrated

Industry 4.0 & Enabling Technologies

Few definitions to understand how Innovative Technologies enable the Industry 4.0 Paradigm within Safety & Security issues:

  • Industry 4.0: is the current Paradigm of Automation and Data Exchange in manufacturing leading to Smart Manufacturing; the idea is to combine concepts such as Cyber-Physical Systems, the Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Modeling and Simulation, Augment & Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Agents to create a common intuitive framework to control the Industrial Processes
  • M&S: Modeling and Simulation use the computers to recreate real systems on computers and to experiment them within such virtual environment; this allow to conduct experiments and tests even before a new industrial system is realized and to conduct Virtual Prototyping as well as to develop Training Equipment and decision Support Systems (DSS)
  • Virtual Reality: is the combined use of Computer Solutions to Immerse the user into a Virtual Framework; currently Virtual Reality is flexible in working over multiple platforms such as Smartphohes, Tablets, Laptops, PC and it could result into a simple 3D World over a Screen to a fully immersive solutions (e.g. CAVE, Head Mounted Display, Hololens) that include also sound, motion, vibrations, force feedback (e.g. motion platforms, data gloves)
  • Augmented Reality: is a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world whose elements are augmented by additional information provided by computer programs; in this way it is possible to add data from Dbase and Sensors, Sound, Video, Graphics, 3D and/or GPS info.

Virtual & Augmented Reality for Industry 4.0

The use of Modeling & Simulation (M&S) and Virtual Reality (VR) allows to create 3D Prototypes of Plants, Skids, Machines, Equipment, Products and Processes and to test Virtually New Solutions.
This Virtual Simulation supports Engineering, Training & Management on the Virtual Worlds and enables developments of Augmented Reality (AR) applications to improve Safety, Effectiveness and Efficiency.
Safety, Productivity and Training are areas where these solutions could result Revolutionary, creating with M&S and VR the foundations of Industry 4.0
Simulation Team represents an leading entity in this area having developed a set of advanced Solutions and experimentations in different contexts thanks to a strong cooperations with Industries, Agencies and Institutions.

A Revolution in Safety and Security for New Generations based on AR, VR & M&S

AR, VR & M&S are Enabling Technologies that support the Revolution on Safety & Security issues? Let's use an example to understand what it means: Today is possible to acquire information from things and people, in real time, able to support situation awareness, prevention of crisis and increase in Safety and Security. It becomes possible to recreate 3D Models of Complex Scenarios, Systems, Plants that could be simulated in terms of operations and procedures; these Models could be included in Virtual Interactive Worlds to create training programs to educate and train people in using and in the total safety on the simulation. In addition these Virtual Models be empowered by Augmented Reality Solutions overlapping Models and Data to the Reality Model in order to provide directions to improve Safety and Security. In addition these AR & VR could be combined with data, pictures, manuals, videos and even Intelligent Assistants based on AI and Multilanguage Speech Recognition in order to futher improve the support to operators during a crisis. It is not science fiction, Safety and Security Workshop it will be able to test new Solutions developed by Simulation Team.

Simulation: a Strategic Science for the Future

Simulation is a Strategic Science able to address most complex problems and the Simulation Team, is a major excellence network in Modeling and Simulation. Simulation Team is an innovation leader on several methodologies including among the others MS2G (Modeling, interoperable Simulation & Serious Games), HBM (Human Behavior Modelling), SaaS (Simulation as a Service), Standards & Architettures, Mobile Training, Intelligent Agents, Smart Interactive Cave.

The Polytechnic School of Genoa University

The Polytechnic School integrates Engineering and Architecture Departments of Genoa University (established 1471). The School benefits from creative talents able to integrate technology, innovation and art for developing the Future. This is obviously inspired by the original spirit of the Town: Genoa, or "the Superb" as it was called by Petrarch, is an unique port city credited to have affected human history by its many achievements. The Polytechnic School is addressing modern challenges by a multidisciplinary approach driven by enabling technologies and inspired design. Special attention is addressed to excel into Education Programs as well as to promote Industrial and Social R&D Projects based on most innovative solutions.
